This edition of CHURCH features a special appearance by a true living treasure, DJ Questlove,
legendary co-founder of The Roots. A Philly native, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson is renowned
for a multitude of contributions as drummer, executive producer and producer to some of the
finest hip hop, soul and pop music from the past two decades, including D’Angelo, Erykah Badu,
Slum Village, Common, Bilal, Joshua Redman and Fiona Apple, to name just a few. Armed
with over 50,000 records in his collection, DJ Questlove is one of the top draws on the turntables
around the world, with the ability to craft a eclectic set from hip hop, soul, house and rare groove
that keeps a crowd on their feet all night long.

Rounding out the lineup is Casey Benjamin on saxophone. Born and raised in Jamaica, Queens,
Benjamin has gained global attention for his featured role in The Robert Glasper Experiment, as
well as collaborations with Q-Tip and Mos Def. He is also one half of the funk/pop/new wave
duo HEAVy.

Mark de Clive-Lowe continues to build on the success of his new CHURCH monthly series in
New York at DROM. Previous installments have featured talented artists such as Rich Medina,
Jose James, Jean Grae, N’Dea Davenport, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Jaleel Shaw and DJ
Spinna performing to capacity crowds.

CHURCH is a whirlwind mix of live jazz, sampling and a DJ set. Fast becoming the discerning
music-lovers’ and musicians’ event of choice, don’t be surprised if you spot the likes of Master
at Work Louie Vega or soul legend Leon Ware in the audience; Chris “Daddy” Dave, Marcus
Strickland, James Genus, MC John Robinson or Miguel Atwood-Ferguson on the stage and the
likes of The Gaslamp Killer or DJ Spinna on the decks. The first live set showcases the jazz
side of MdCL, blending the jazz history, groove explorations and classic trio interplay with
resampling, electronics and live remixing. As the first set draws to a close, the guest DJ takes
over the soundtrack while the tables and chairs are cleared away for MdCL to flip the script with
the second set – a unique blend of live electronica and live remixing – the jazz club colliding head
to head with the dance floor. This month, be prepared for sparks to fly as MdCL goes head-to-
head with the incomparible DJ, Questlove.
